Cloud Atlas
Level: Intermediate to experienced
About the Workshop:
This is a theatrical improv workshop inspired by Cloud Atlas, an award-winning historical/science fiction novel spanning from history to the future. We take key improv skills inspired by the structure of Cloud Atlas to build interconnected scenes set in different times and styles. The material is so rich that we have two parts: Playing with history and playing with genre.
In playing with history, we build living, breathing environments from different historical eras – either real or alternate timelines. The industrial revolution? The discovery of flight? The rise of jazz? Human settlement on Mars? We will learn to create an atmosphere and beautiful stage pictures as an ensemble. We will learn to build a shared vocabulary from the group’s knowledge – a necessary skill for any improviser.
In playing with genre, we play with different tempo and moods. A murder mystery at the stock exchange? A bleak Scandinavian noir during the roaring 20s? A romance during The Great Depression? We visit a variety of genres and see the little gears that make them what they are. We will learn to shift between slow, grounded scenes to fast, comedic group scenes.
